Visa or Mastercard — which is better and what is the difference

The most popular and widespread payment systems in the world are Visa and MasterCard. They occupy a large half of the market of all transactions. In this article, we will talk about which one is better and what are their differences.

1. What do Visa and Mastercard have in common

Most of us use bank cards. All of them are connected to some kind of payment system.

For example, now many Russian banks with the advent of the Mir payment system began to offer it. In particular, all social payments: maternity, pensions go to her.

Until 2014, almost 100% of cards issued in our country had MasterCard and Visa payment systems.

In terms of their set of properties and functionality, they are almost the same:

  1. High level of reliability;
  2. High speed of payment processing;
  3. Failures are practically absent;
  4. Approximately the same service fees;

In this eternal rivalry between the two giants Visa and Mastercard, the first wins a little in popularity. Visa has the largest number of terminals.

Visa and Mastercard have an identical range of cards, which differ in classes:

  1. Elementary. Visa Electron, Mastercard — Maestro, Electronic, Unembossed;
  2. Standard. Visa Classic, MasterCard Standart;
  3. Premium. Visa Gold or Platinum, MasterCard Gold or Platinum;

The first level is usually given at work as a salary card. This is where the options are most limited. Even online payment on the Internet is not available here. But in MasterCard Unembossed cards, this feature is enabled due to the appearance of the CVC2 code on the reverse side.

The only difference with the initial cards is that the Mastercard Maestro requires you to enter a pin code. This option is the default. Naturally, everything can be configured the way you want.

2. The main differences between Visa and MasterCard

As we noted at the beginning of the article: Visa and Mastercard are almost exactly the same if we compare their conditions for daily use. But still there are some points. Let’s list them.

1 Perhaps the most striking and noticeable difference is that for Visa the main currency is dollars, and for Mastercard it is euro. In this regard, at the time of converting rubles into euros or dollars, additional commissions may arise.

For example, if you are traveling around Europe and decide to pay for a purchase with a ruble Visa card, then the following will be done: rubles are converted into dollars, and then into euros. In principle, there is nothing to worry about, just the commission for such an operation will be a little more. Maybe 1-3%. In the case of Mastercard, rubles would be immediately converted into euros.

The same is true if you are traveling in a place that accepts dollars and you only have a Mastercard. You will have to pay double the conversion fee.

2 There is one more nuance, connected again with the conversion of rates. You can find out from MasterCard upon the fact of the exchange, and look at Visa in advance. In this regard, Visa wins.

3 We have already talked about the pin code a little higher.

This is where all the differences between Visa and MasterCard end.

Finally, let’s briefly give some data about the two payment systems.

conclusions

It is impossible to say with certainty that one payment system is better than another. As we noted, the most important differences are only in the course conversion. Otherwise, these cards are almost the same.

3. How to invest in Visa and MasterCard stocks

Visa and MasterCard are traded on the stock exchange. Any natural person can become their shareholder.

Quotes of these two systems are growing rapidly. There are more and more payments in the world, the number of customers is growing.

To access trading on the stock exchange, I recommend the services of the following stock brokers:

These are the best brokers for trading, which have the lowest commissions per turnover, have offices throughout Russia, free deposits and withdrawals. They will provide access to all financial instruments on the exchange (stocks, bonds, futures, ETFs, currencies). Here you can buy foreign stocks, follow the strategies of professionals, and more.

You can even buy Visa and MasterCard shares through a mobile trading app or by calling a broker. Detailed instructions can be found in the articles:

In addition to the growth of quotes, the investor also receives dividends. Since these companies do not belong to dividend companies, the amount of payment is a modest 1-2% per annum in dollars at the current exchange rate. If you hold shares for a long time, then quotes can grow significantly and dividends on invested money will be greater.
